Gallup: Republicans Energized by Hatred of Europe

Over at Talking Points Memo, Eric Kleefield may have just found the needle in the statistical haystack that could explain why McCain suddenly leads among "likely voters": They hate foreigners, especially Europeans.

Gallup pollster Frank Newport speculates that for his poll, Republicans are listing themselves as likely voters in greater numbers because of all the press coverage surrounding Obama's overseas trip and the crowds welcoming him in Europe: "At least in the short term it may have had the side effect of energizing Republicans."

For the past seven years since 911 I have debating with myelf why Republicans are so much more likley to be afraid of and/or loathe the outside world. Do people call themselves Republicans because they are afraid, or are they afraid because they are Republicans, and need to validate what their leaders tell them. If Gallup is correct, what we are witnessing among GOP voters is an emotional need to maintain the same posture vis a vis Europe that we have for the past 8 years. If Bush did not get along with Europe then we damn well better not support someone who does. It is also possible that they are resentful that people are flocking to this new guy after scorning our glorious president. So, if Gallup is right expect 2 things over the next couple of weeks:

1. McCain's numbers will drop and Obama's will rise.
2. More xenophobia from the Republicans.

This is July, not September. The Olympics are coming along with more bad mortgage and economic news. And whatever steam McCain may have gathered from out the ears of Republican voters will fade away.

Re: Gallup: Republicans Energized (none / 0)

I think Gallup's trying to cover for a mistake: their likely voter screen.

I'm not surprised (2.00 / 1)

I'm living in Europe now, and every time I meet someone and tell them I'm American, they ask "Why do you guys hate us so much?"

The American people; they were for the war before they were against it.

That LV screen is the worst I've ever seen. (none / 0)

Seriously.

According to that screen, 98% of registered voters who prefer McCain will turn out to vote for him.

98%.

Re: Gallup: (none / 0)

hmmm from your link

"This runs contrary to all the other polls out there, which have Obama ahead in both the registered and likely voter categories."

I will wait for more polls to support this particular poll.

Thanks for trying...

This is all cover stories.... (2.00 / 1)

The Republics have very little else.

I suppose we will have some Gay Marriage DOM initative someplace on the ballots...

Expect some some nice 527 "Rev-Wright-No Flag Pin-Michelle is Angela Davis" ads running on late October.

Oh, and, yeah, Barack is a "liberal elite intellectual flag hating-Europe loving socialist who hates America"

Point is, most of those folks who spin that way only need a picture, to see he's black.

The rest is just cover for them, in polite society, voting racist is not allowed anymore.

Unless you're in Kentucky or.....

The Euro hate from the Republicans is bizarre. It's a faction of course, the base, around 30% of all voters. The sort of people who think Jesse Helms was a hero of the Republican party. This is a sick party. I'm happy to say.
